Michael Tchouaffé developed these guiding principles while presenting his architectural thesis in Paris, France. The framework positions each project at the intersection of two essential axes: cultural and economic.
The Cultural Axis
The Cultural Axis connects the project’s program—what the building must accomplish—with the client’s background, identity, values, and aspirations.
The Economic Axis
The Economic Axis connects the project’s location—its physical, environmental, and community context—with the budget and resources available to realize it.
The Architectural Idea
Program, Background, Location, and Budget are brought together through the architectural idea or concept that guides the design.
These guiding principles are not a formula for good design, but an effective process for creating architecture that is purposeful, contextual, responsible, and meaningful.
